IELTS Exam Results & Scores 2024

IELTS exam results are reported on a 9-band scale designed to be simple and easy to understand. They are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest). All formats of IELTS use the same scoring system. You can find information about the IELTS test results and scores on the official websites of IDP and the British Council. These websites provide detailed information on how to access your results, the IELTS scoring system, Test Report Form (TRF), Additional Test Report Form (ATRF), Enquiry on Results (EOR) and re-sitting the test.

How to Calculate Overall IELTS Score?

The overall IELTS score is calculated by taking the average of the scores from each of the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section is scored on a scale from 0 to 9, with half-band increments (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). The overall IELTS band score is then calculated by taking the average of the four section scores and rounding to the nearest half or whole band.

For example, if you achieve a score of 6.5 for Listening, 7.0 for Reading, 6.0 for Writing, and 7.5 for Speaking, your overall band score in IELTS would be calculated as follows: (6.5 + 7.0 + 6.0 + 7.5) ÷ 4 = 27 ÷ 4 = 6.75. This would be rounded up to an overall band score of 7.0.

It's important to note that there is no pass or fail in the IELTS exam; instead, your score reflects your level of proficiency in English. Organisations and institutions may have different requirements for the minimum IELTS score needed for admission or employment.

What is the IELTS Band Score?

The IELTS band score is a measure of a test taker's proficiency in the English language. The IELTS test assesses four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each skill is scored on a scale from 0 to 9, with half-band increments (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). The overall band score is then calculated by taking the average of the four section scores and rounding to the nearest half or whole band.

Each band score corresponds to a level of English proficiency. For example, a band score of 9 indicates an expert user with a fully operational language command. In contrast, a band score of 1 indicates a non-user who cannot essentially use the language. The IELTS band scores are widely recognised and accepted by universities, immigration authorities, and professional bodies worldwide as a reliable indicator of English language proficiency.

How Long Is My IELTS Score Valid?

An IELTS score Validity is two years from the test date. If you take the IELTS test on January 1, 2023, your test results will be valid until January 1, 2025. After this date, your test results will no longer be considered valid by most organisations and institutions that require an IELTS score for admission or employment.

It's important to note that some organisations and institutions may have policies regarding IELTS score validity. For example, some universities may accept IELTS scores that are more than two years old if the applicant can provide evidence of continued English language study or use. Confirming their requirements with the specific organisation or institution is always a good idea.

How Do I Send My IELTS Score to Universities?

You can send your IELTS score to universities by requesting a Test Report Form (TRF) from the institutions you are applying to. When you register for the IELTS test, you can request up to five additional TRFs to be sent to universities, colleges or other organisations free of charge. If you need to send your results to more than five organisations or request additional TRFs after the test date, there may be a fee for this service.

To request additional TRFs, you can contact the test centre where you took the IELTS test. You will need to provide the full name and address of the institution or organisation you want your results sent to, as well as your personal details and test date. The test centre will then send your TRF directly to the institution or organisation on your behalf.

Some universities and institutions may have their requirements for receiving IELTS scores. For example, some may require that the TRF be sent directly from the test centre, while others may accept a copy of the TRF provided by the applicant. It's always a good idea to check with the specific university or institution to confirm their requirements.
