Exams Required to Study in Australia

Australia is one of the best study destinations in the world. Students from all around the world move to Australia for higher education. More than 400,000 international students move to Australia every year for their studies. It creates tough competition, and students must take an exam to prove themselves.

Thus, international students need to appear for two types of tests. These tests that students need to appear for are English proficiency tests and entrance exams. Sometimes, students may also be enrolled based on their academic scores. But, students must give at least one exam to enrol in any of the top Australian universities.

English proficiency tests are exams that assess a student's fluency in the English language. All international students must appear in English tests like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, etc. On the other hand, entrance tests may assess a student's knowledge of a subject. For example, undergraduate students need to appear for Sat or Act, while graduate students appear for GRE or GMAT. Each of these exams assesses different topics and is for various courses.

English proficiency tests assess a student's English language skills and are a requirement for admission in Australia. All students, except those from native English-speaking countries, must appear for these tests. Other than university admission, these are useful for visa purposes.

Students can appear on one of the four English tests – IELTS, CAE, TOEFL, and PTE. The course requires students to meet other exam requirements. Students will only get admitted based on their English tests and academic scores.

Below are details of different English proficiency tests:

IELTS, or International English Language Testing System, is the most commonly accepted English test. Students can register for this test via the official website. They can also note offline by downloading the IELTS application form and submitting it by courier. Australia requires a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 to admit students. But to be admitted to a reputable university, pupils must achieve a score of 7.0 overall.

  • CAE: Cambridge Advanced English Test

Cambridge Advanced English test is conducted by the University of Cambridge ESOL. This exam is for students applying for undergraduate courses. Students may take these exams during standard 11 or 12, as the results are valid for two years. Students can give these exams as computer-based or paper-based tests. It has five sections: writing, speaking, reading, usage of English, and listening. CAE scores are in the form of grades with CEFR levels. One must score between 60-79 or a C1 to enrol in any university.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an internet-based 120-mark test consisting of 4 sections with 30 marks in each area. These four sections are speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Students can register for this exam online through the website and app or offline through a courier.

Students must score at least 90 on the TOEFL to get admitted to any university. But, getting a score of 100 – 110 is considered outstanding.
