How Does Canada's Education System Work?

The education system in Canada is the same for national and international students. One needs to school kids until the age of 16 years. They divided the education system into four levels: pre-elementary, primary, secondary and post-secondary levels.

All the college and university courses lie under the post-secondary level. This level is further divided into seven levels, namely:

  • Certificate level–This includes all the certificate courses and lasts for a year.
  • Diploma levelThis includes all the diploma courses and lasts for one or two years.
  • The advanced diploma includes courses based on a specific area of study that lasts for two or three years.
  • Bachelor's degrees include all bachelor's degrees like B.Sc., B.Tech, etc. It has four years of full-time study.
  • Postgraduate diplomas/certificates include all the PG diplomas and certificate courses that last for one or two years.
  • Master's degrees are available after a bachelor's degree to excel in certain subjects. These last for one to two years.
  • Doctorate or PhD: This is the ultimate course specializing in a subject and lasts for four to seven years.

What are the Academic Intakes in Canada for International Students?

Academic intakes for international students in Canada occur in three sessions–Fall, Winter, and Summer Intake. These intakes are called semesters in Canada.

Given below are details about different intakes:

  • Fall intake, the primary intake in Canada, starts in September.
  • Winter Intake, better known as the secondary intake, starts in January. This means that most universities offer all their courses in Fall Intake as it is the primary intake, while Winter Intake is for the students who missed their chance in Fall. Many universities also offer fresh courses in Canada in January/Winter Intake.
  • Summer Intake is the last intake and starts in May. It offers the least number of courses and is quite unpopular.

Academic Year & Teaching Style in Canada

  • The majority of colleges and universities in Canada have an academic year that starts in early September and ends in April or May. This is called the winter session and has two terms. Term 1 lasts from September to December, and Term 2 lasts from January to April.
  • Some institutes also offer summer sessions that take place in May and August. There are also select schools in Canada that provide schooling year-round.
  • As for the Teaching style, Canadian universities provide world-class education and include research and high-quality teaching. Their primary goal is to provide opportunities to students for improved learning, career, and life.
  • Thus, teaching is a mix of lectures and tutorials. Professors usually teach lectures to a group of 30–200 students. While they teach tutorials in labs and contain in-depth study and discussion of topics.
